Queenstown New Zealand

Located in the south-west of the South Island of New Zealand, Queenstown is the adventure capital of New Zealand (some would argue the world)!

Why would you go there?

  • It has an international airport so is directly accessible from Australia as well as other airports in New Zealand.

  • It is located on the north-eastern shores of Lake Wakatipu and has stunning views over the Lake. The town has a real adventure vibe and many great restaurants.

  • The list of activities that you can access in/from Queenstown is long. The following list is only a highlight of what is on offer

- skiing and snowboarding (two resorts close by)

- golf courses

- mountain biking

- hiking (both around Queenstown but also a great starting point for hikes such as the Routeburn and Milford Track)

- jetboating

- white-water rafting

- fly fishing

- sky diving

- bungy jumping

- wineries

Best time to visit?

  • The word is out. Queenstown is popular throughout the year. Whilst only a population of 16,000, this swells significantly with tourists. In the year ending August 2019, 3.9m tourists visited Queenstown.

  • Visit winter for snow sports. Rest of the year for other activities.

Amenities and Facilities

  • Many great bars and restaurants. Lots of accommodation options. It is a really nice town to stroll around with everything very accessible by foot.

Conclusions

  • A great place with many things to do. For any trip to New Zealand, you should allow yourself some time in Queenstown. For those looking for something quieter, but equally attractive, try Wanaka, which is around 60-90 minutes away by car.

  • Must do – take Gondola ride up to Bob’s Peak (480m above Queenstown) for spectacular view of Queenstown and the region.
